Experiences > Trekking opportunities > Asia > Everest and Gokyo Lakes

This is an alternative trek to Everest Base Camp taking the western route via the Gokyo Lakes and Cho La Pass, which offers a tougher, longer and more remote adventure. From Namche Bazaar, you head west into the Bhote Kosi Valley and head to Gokyo via Machhermo and Dole. From Gokyo village, you can climb Gokyo Ri (5360m) for spectacular views of four of the seven highest Nepalese peaks - Cho Oyu (8153m) to the north, Everest (8848m) and Lhotse (8512m) to the east and further to Makalu (8463m), as well as the Ngozumpo glacier, the longest in Nepal which descends the slopes of Cho Oyu. You trek across the Ngozumpo glacier through the Cho La Pass to reach the main route to Everest Base Camp. From here, you can climb Kala Pattar for the best close-up views of Everest and trek across the Khumbu Glacier to the base camp before returning to Namche Bazaar via Dingboche and Thyangboche.

The perfect trek for those who wish to avoid the busier trails in the Everest region but still gain stunning views of Everest. Trekking slowly through Sherpa villages and yak pastures we emerge into the stunning Gokyo Valley with it's beautiful lakes, here we ascend Gokyo Ri for one of the finest views of Everest and surrounding peaks including Cho Oyu in Tibet. From our remote high camp west of Gokyo we prepare for the highlight of the trek, the crossing of the Renjo La. The views of Everest are incredible as we weave our way to the top of the pass at 5400m, before our descent to Mirlung along a rarely trodden trail where we are unlikely to see other trekkers. Undeniably trekking at its best in the Everest region.

Gokyo Lakes

The Gokyo Lakes region at the head of the Dudh Kosi Valley provides a great alternative to the popular Everest Base Camp trek. It is a more tranquil trek through the Sherpa heartland that affords ample time for acclimatisation with opportunities to savour mountain panoramas from our private permanent campsites. The highlight of the trek is our ascent of Gokyo Ri. From the summit at over 5000m we gain superb views of Everest as well as the 8000m peaks of Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu in Tibet. Many trekkers will argue that this is one of the finest views in the Himalaya, the awesome bulk of Everest dominates the skyline and for those so motivated, late afternoon is a fine time to make the climb above the shimmering lakes to the top of Gokyo Ri to capture sunset over one of the most awesome spectacles the Nepal Himalaya has to offer.

With over 200 holidays to choose from, KE Adventure Travel has one of the very best collections of trekking and walking holidays worldwide. Graded on a scale from 1 to 12, we have holidays to suit everyone. Our tougher treks are likely to involve multi-day hikes through wilderness regions, with porter support and tented accommodation. Whilst at the other end of the scale, our softer walking holidays are more likely to be hotel or lodge-based with a day-walk format and an emphasis on uncovering the area's history, culture and cuisine. From our earliest days we've developed a range of treks that include celebrated classics such as Peru's Inca Trail trek, the ascent of Tanzania's Kilimanjaro and the ever popular Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal. Alongside these, we have always made it a priority to seek out distinctive and unique itineraries in less familiar areas such as Armenia, Cameroon, Madagascar and Burma. Whichever of our trekking or walking holidays you choose to undertake, you can be sure you'll enjoy breaking out of your day-to-day routine and exploring exotic landscapes on foot, with the chance to experience different cultures.

The Ultimate Everest Lodge Trek

Home to Everest Base Camp and the famously friendly Sherpas, the Khumbu trekking region boasts some of the most extraordinary high mountain scenery on earth. After flying in to Lukla, our exciting trek to Everest Base camp takes us via the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar to the sacred lakes of the Gokyo Valley. Here, we climb Gokyo Ri which is one of the finest vantage points for Mount Everest (8848m). Crossing into the Khumbu Valley by way of the high and challenging Cho La (5420m), we then climb to the "trekkers summit" of Kala Patar (5600m) which affords more stunning views of Mount Everest and of the astonishing Khumbu Icefall. We have time to walk up to Everest Basecamp, before trekking out by way of the famous and recently restored monastery at Thyangboche. Staying in comfortable Sherpa lodges throughout, this circuit of the Everest National Park provides a comprehensive taste of the Khumbu that is hard to beat within a 3-week adventure holiday.
