How to choose your trip to Peru

Peru is a hugely popular adventure travel destination. Most tours focus on Southern Peru (including Lima, Machu Picchu, the Amazon and Lake Titicaca) with a choice of whether or not to include the four day Inca Trail. Tours focusing on the classic or alternative Inca Trails are also available. The north of Peru is more off the beaten track, with the option of historical discovery or magnificent trekking in the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash. Trips to Peru can also be combined with other South American highlights, either Along the Andes or across the continent on the Gringo Trail.

Our Discovery collection draws together the best of our holidays that focus on the culture of a destination, as well as on visiting iconic sights and embracing local traditions. Some of these Discovery holidays will also have an element of activity, combining sightseeing with short walks, for example. Others might have a multi-activity holiday format, including biking and/or rafting, for instance, and these holidays are specifically designed for the adrenaline seeker! Also within our discovery collection are those of our holidays with a wildlife emphasis, photographic workshops, and polar cruise holidays. Never too physically demanding, these are predominantly touring holidays and their grade (usually towards the lower end of our 1 to 12 scale) reflects, in part, the remoteness of the area visited and the conditions likely to be encountered. Our Discovery holidays allow the discerning traveller to get right to the heart of many of the world's most stimulating destinations.

Peru Land of the Incas

11 days       from  £1795 excl. flights*

If you want to gain an insight into the Andean country of Peru, with its Incan and Spanish Colonial history, its Quechua heritage and amazing landscapes, this new discovery holiday is hard to beat. Flying in to Cusco, we ease the process of altitude acclimatization by spending the first 4 nights of the holiday at a rather lower elevation, in and around the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our cultural immersion begins here, spending time with Quechua families at remote villages, learning about traditional methods of agriculture and textile weaving. Hiking to fascinating Inca ruins, we also visit the traditional Sunday Market at Pisac, before taking the train to matchless Machu Picchu for a guided tour. Visits to the salt pans at Maras and the Incan terracing at Moray end our time in the Sacred Valley, as we travel back to the Andean capital of Cusco for a city tour. By now well-acclimatised and ready to explore, a free day in Cusco, one of Latin America's most exciting cities, is a welcome and appropriate addition to the holiday. We then make a spectacular crossing of the Altiplano (and the continental divide) to reach our final destination, Lake Titicaca. Here, a host of new experiences awaits us, as we stay with a local community, before taking a boat trip onto the lake to visit both Taquile Island and the very unusual floating reed islands of the Uros people. A final-day visit to the pre-Incan burial site at Sillustani is a great way to sign off. Visit the sites, meet the people. Viva El Peru! This is one of our Explore International holidays. Participants on these trips can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience!
