We start in Delhi, the famous gateway to India and then move on to the forts, palaces and havelis which have made Jaipur - the dusky pink city, Jodphur - the fabled blue city, and Udaipur - India’s Venice of the East, so famous. However we will also experience the largely undiscovered rural areas of Khandela, Bhenswara and Bijaipur where we take a dip into the lives of the rural population, far removed from the pageantry and excesses of the old days of the Raj and today’s modern Maharajahs. To add to the variety we also head out on safari in search of tigers in Ranthambore and some incredible birdlife in Gajner. And of course no visit to Rajasthan would be complete without the wonderful city of Jaisalmer rising majestically out of the desert floor. The hospitality in this area of India is one of warmth and generosity from the locals, whether they are the traditionally robed Rajput warrior males topped with the distinctive turbans, or the local women swathed in their beautifully coloured saris in the villages. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is in fact Ravla Khempur, an old favourite of Wild Frontiers and a palace at which you will enjoy two nights. This charming rural hotel, with a history dating from the early 17th Century, was once famed for its stud of fine Marwari horses and is still home to dancing stallions which perform, when requested, in front of the magnificent turreted building. An equine theme runs through each of the hotel's 12 en suite bedrooms, while a number of quiet nooks and crannies, including a delightful rooftop terrace, are dotted about the rest of the hotel.
