Julian Alps Lakes and Mountains 8 days
from £775 excl. flights* The Julian Alps lie at the eastern extremity of the main European alpine chain, straddling the border between Italy and north western Slovenia. Characterised by striking limestone peaks rising above blue lakes and alpine meadows dotted with tiny villages of traditional architecture, this area with its many varied trails is perfect for a hotel-based, moderately-paced walking holiday. Our base for this walking holiday is the pretty lakeside town of Bled with its iconic island church. In a series of day walks, we will explore the Karavanke Mountains on the border of Austria with its network of tunnels, the hidden valleys and waterfalls of the Martuljak Mountains and the beautiful forested Pokljuka plateau where shepherds and cow herders carry on a traditional way of life unhurried and unchanged for centuries. A highlight of the week is a two-day walk in the Triglav National Park where we make use of a cable car to get high into the Julian Alps and stay overnight in a mountain hut, stunningly located on the east-viewing ridge of the Komna Plateau overlooking Lake Bohinj. This classic ‘Lakes and Mountains' walking holiday is the perfect introduction to moderate alpine hiking in a spectacular setting and with all the comforts of a hotel base. |

Across the Julian Alps to Triglav 8 days
from £725 excl. flights* Straddling northern Italy and Slovenia, the limestone massif of the Julian Alps is at its wildest and most impressive in the Triglav National Park. Similar to the Dolomites, the Julian Alps form the northernmost part of the Dinaric Alps and are seemingly designed for perfect mountain walking holiday. The stunningly beautiful reserve area of the Triglav National Park extends across a mountainous region of alpine pasture, pine forest, clear streams and rocky lakes, which is served by a number of well-established mountain huts and crossed by several superb waymarked trekking routes. Although not as high as the Western Alps, these mountains are spectacularly rugged and offer simply brilliant high-level alpine style walking. From the lakeside town of Bled, we transfer to the start of our walking near to the lake of Bohinj (Bohinjsko Jezero) and from here make an ascent of Crna Prst (1844m.) which overlooks the lake. Maintaining our height, we spend the next 3 days trekking on a wonderful ridge, traversing 2000 metre peaks, high above lush alpine valleys before crossing the Skrbina Pass (1891m). A gentler walking day in the ‘valley of the 7 lakes,' leads to the foot of the highest mountain in Slovenia, the spectacular triple-summitted Triglav (2864m). The climb to the top is airy, with some scrambling and sections of fixed cable - but the view is described by Baedeker as "... one of the most sublime among the Alps." We can look forward to extensive views across the Julian Alps and over the Karavanke and Kamnik Alps into Austria. This most memorable of mountain walking days provides a fitting climax to a brilliant week's walking holiday in Slovenia. If you are looking for a superb week of hut-to-hut alpine trekking, this holiday walking across the Julian Alps of Slovenia to the summit of Triglav is hard to beat. |
