The Ultimate Annapurna Trek

After Everest, the Annapurna range of mountains north of Pokhara are the most well known in Nepal and the highest peak, Annapurna I, has the distinction of being the first 8000-metre peak ever to be climbed. Four Annapurna peaks over 7500 metres together with Gangapurna form the main range, considered to be the most beautiful in the Himalaya and extending southwards, two encircling arms ending in Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (the ‘Fishtail' peak), enclose a high cirque only penetrated by outsiders as recently as 1956. These are the locations for two of the Himalaya's classic treks, namely the Annapurna Circuit which circumnavigates the range and the Annapurna Sanctuary which visits the hidden cirque to view the incredible South Face of Annapurna. Previously these two treks were quite separate but taking advantage of new jeep roads which allow high access to the valleys of the Marsyangdi and Kali Gandaki we can combine the two most famous trails of the region into one classic 3-week trek. This Ultimate Annapurna trek combines spectacular mountain scenery with a wide diversity of ethnic and cultural experiences as we travel through very different ecological life zones. This is without doubt, the ultimate Annapurna experience and is justifiably placed among the world's top treks.

Over more than 30 years Explore has developed a diverse and exciting range of more than 100 walking and trekking holidays. Annapurna Circuit

One of Nepal's classic treks, this route takes us on a full circuit of the Annapurna range. We trek through rhododendron forests, mountain foothills, barren rocky landscapes and across snow covered passes. After the challenging ascent of the Thorong La Pass (5416m) we are rewarded with dramatic views of the Annapurna range and northwards into Tibet.

On this incredible trekking adventure, spend 13 challenging days traversing rhododendron forests, isolated hamlets, and mountain villages. For six to seven hours a day, follow the trails of this challenging circuit on and around one of the world’s highest mountains while encountering temples, monasteries, and breathtaking landscapes. Annapurna and the Thorung La

The Annapurna circuit trek includes the chance to experience the best of Nepal's landscapes, from the hot and humid farmland around Pokhara, to the high alpine environment and spectacular mountain scenery of the valley above Manang. Access to each of the major valleys that cut through the Himalayas to the east and west of the Annapurna Massif improves each year, as successive sections of jeep road are completed. Making every effort to take account of this (and to avoid hiking on the road as much as we can) we adjust our itineraries on a regular basis. From the effective roadhead beside the Marsyangdi River at Dharapani, we trek easily into the impressive valley on the north side of the Annapurnas. Here, we can marvel at the spectacular mountain scenery as we hike up to the villages of Ghyaru and Ngawal on the northern slopes of the valley. We are also able to savour the special appeal of this remote Buddhist enclave, with its perched villages and striking monasteries, such as the one at Braga. The culmination of the trek is the tough ascent to the Thorung La (5416m), where the views extend to Dhaulagiri and the red ridges of Mustang. Descending into the Kali Gandaki via the amazing Hindu temples at Muktinath, we have a day to enjoy the pretty 'Tibetan' village of Marpha, before flying back to Kathmandu from Jomsom.
