Trans-Sicily and Mount Etna Bike

We start this great mountain biking traverse from the unspoiled town of Cefalu on Sicily's northern coast. Six days of great cycling, on dirt roads, farm tracks and forest trails, then takes us eastwards to Giardini Naxos beside the Ionian Sea. We pass through the important reserve areas of the Madonie Mountains and the Nebrodi Mountains, each of them forming a part of the Sicilian Apennines. Throughout the ride, we regularly have views northwards to the sea and to the scattered Ionian Islands. For a couple of the days in the central part of the ride, we use traditional farmstay or '˜agriturismo' accommodation where we will have the chance to sample '˜cucina tipica' local Sicilian food and hospitality. Beyond the forest trails of the Nebrodi Mountains, we make our approach to the ultimate challenge of the trip, Mount Etna. We cycle to the crater rim on this active volcano in 2 stages, with an overnight stop-off at a hotel at 1900 metres. Finally, from a height of 3100 metres, we enjoy a mega-blast back down to sea-level and a celebratory dip in the sea. Sicily offers a wealth of magnificent terrain for mountain bikers and this is, quite simply, the best itinerary on the island!
