Iceland Three Peaks Challenge 8 days
from £2295 excl. flights* Classic volcano climbing holiday adventure in Iceland, walking in the land of fire and Ice. A simply breathtaking variety of Icelandic mountain scenery makes this one of the most unusual climbing expeditions on offer. From the exuberant city of Reykjavik, our walking and climbing adventure begins with the easy ascent of Botnssulur(1083m) overlooking Lake Thingvellir. On this first day we also get the chance to visit the geothermal area at Geysir and to see the mighty Gullfoss waterfall. The explosive volcano, Hekla, is our next climbing goal and involves a testing 1000 metre climb, across ash and snow, to reach its fissured, steaming summit. After Hekla, we then make the spectacular crossing of the wildly volcanic highland region of Iceland, the Fjallabak, with our rugged 4x4 vehicles at times almost submerged as we ford several rivers en route. A stop-off at the famous Landmannalaugar hot pools is obligatory. Arriving at Skaftafell, we have 2 days during which our principal objective is to make the ascent of Hvannadalshnukur (2119m), the highest mountain in Iceland. With 24 hours of daylight, the long and straightforward climb to Iceland's high point certainly carries no risk of our being benighted! With our climbing objectives achieved, we then have the option to explore Skaftafell National Park and to make an excursion to Jokulsarlon, where the amazing, iceberg-filled glacial lagoon has provided the backdrop for more than one James Bond movie. This brilliant walking and climbing adventure in Iceland draws to a close with a visit to the Skogarfoss waterfall, as we complete our circuit and return to Reykjavik. Please note that we are selling this climbing holiday in conjunction with our partners at Allibert (France's leading independent adventure travel operator) and with our Icelandic ground agent. As a result, these groups, which are led by an English-speaking Icelandic guide, may have an interesting cosmopolitan mix. |

Trek Iceland - Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork 5 days
from £1495 excl. flights* This wild and wonderful walking holiday takes us across the most outrageous of Iceland's volcanic landscapes. From the modern city of Reykjavik to the volcanoes, glaciers and tortured lava formations of the interior, Iceland is a country of great contrast. Our trekking route takes us across the dramatic volcanic region of the Fjallabak, one of the most spectacular places for a walking holiday in Europe. Driving close to Hekla, Iceland's famously active volcano, we reach the start of our trek at Landmannalaugar. From here, our first afternoon of walking takes us south into the mountains, through rocky gorges and by way of steaming hot springs to the ancient lava flows of Hrafntinnusker and our first night in a cosy mountain hut. Our route continues via Lake Alftavatn (Swan Lake) and across the extraordinary black sands of Maelifellssandur, below the Myrdalsjokull Icecap. We traverse the former summer grazing area at Emstrur and visit the magnificent Markarfljot Canyon, en route to the picturesque glaciated valley and birch woodland of Thorsmork (Thor's Forest), where we spend our fourth and final night at a mountain hut. On our last morning at Thorsmork, we have the option to visit Songhellir Cave and to hike to the top of the small peak, Valahnukur, before catching the bus back to Reykjavik. Including 2 nights accommodation in Reykjavik at the end of the holiday means you have the luxury of a free day in this fascinating city. Extending the itinerary to 8 days also makes it work optimally with a choice of flights from the UK. |
