Sacred Summits of Olympus and Meteora

The dramatic and spectacular East coast of Greece is home to one of the most stunning and dramatic sections of the Agean Sea including the awesome UNESCO floating monasteries of Meteora and the superb “Throne of Zeus and Lap of the Gods" - Mount Olympus!  Towering majestically from the centre of UNESCO Olympus National Park, rugged Mytikas (2919m), with its three distinct summits, was mythical Pantheon, home to fiery discussions in ancient Greece and the Throne of Zeus!  This fantastic trekking holiday explores the truly spectacular Olympus National Park on foot whilst staying in traditional Greek mountain huts. Declared a national park in 1938, Olympus National Park was Greece’s first national park and at 500 square kilometres, is a beautiful wild landscape located on the border with Macedonia.  A limestone region of beech and fir trees which are home to chamois, wolves, jackels, woodpeckers, birds of prey, plus an abundance of butterflies.  We start the week in the traditional village of Krastaki, located at the base of the “suspended in the air” Orthodox monasteries of Meteroa.  Famed for the spectacular airy Bond scenes with Roger Moore in "For Your Eyes Only," Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an amazing landscape of towering sandstone pillars topped by beautiful monasteries.  A perfect introduction to the week as we explore original walking trails used by monks in the 11th Century!  After visiting two of these beautiful religious buildings, we head to the quaint town of Litohoro the gateway to Olympus National Park with its stunning mountainous backdrop.  Next we enter the UNESCO park and spend 4 days trekking and overnighting on the mountain as we make use of the fantastically located refuges.  Wild and dramatic Olympus is not only the highest point in the country, but the second highest point in the Balkans.  With its three dramatic summits, deep gorges, throne of Zeus and scrambling sections, Olympus is a real mountain adventure complete with airy ridges and jaw-dropping paths!   If you are looking for a fantastic trekking adventure with views that extend over the beautiful Aegean Coast, then the Sacred Summits of Olympus and Meteora is the only choice!
