After exploring the capital Tbilisi we travel north to Kazbegi and take day walks through Truso Gorge, to Trinity Church and to the foot of Mount Chaukhebi. Travelling east we explore the remote Svaneti region with walks to the base of Mount Ushgali, Mount Shkhara and Mount Chalaadi. Spending time among the locals, we learn about their unique culture.

Svaneti, Georgia's most mysterious mountain region is like a fairy tale come to life. The fabled region is renowned for its enchanting stone villages, punctuated by the famous defensive towers, and populated by a fiercely independent race, known as the Svans. The Georgians have a saying - at the beginning of time when God was giving out land to the various nations of the world the Georgians were too busy drinking to attend. Arriving late, God was angry and asked why they had dishonoured him so; there was now no land left to give them. But the Georgians replied that far from dishonouring God they were late simply because they were drinking to His health and this had taken quite some time. God was pleased by their answer and so gave them the tiny bit of land he had kept for himself. Georgia has some of the world’s most spectacular mountains and some very fine horses making it a perfect location for a one-week horse adventure. But that is not all. By travelling into the Tusheti region, an isolated and immensely characterful part of Georgia with the Tolkeinesque towers, flower-strewn meadows and spectacular snow-capped peak, we are sure to have a cracking adventure, all the while experiencing Georgia’s unrivalled hospitality.

Requiring only 5 days off work, we will take a stunning three day trek through the very heart of the Grand Caucasus Mountains, camping in the high pastures close to the Russian border, as well as visiting some of Georgia’s most impressive cultural sites. The food and wine is among the most delicious in Europe, and tourism is still in its nascent stage. Trekking in Georgia and the High Caucasus

East of the Black Sea and separated from Russia by the long chain of the Caucasus Mountains, Georgia is one of the most exciting adventure travel and trekking/walking destinations in Europe. From the capital Tbilisi, we travel north to the striking Mount Kazbek (5047m) and begin trekking across the Sadzele and Borbalo passes into the remote Khevsureti Range. Crossing open ridges, with far-reaching views, we descend through flower-filled mountain pastures into steep-sided and forested valleys, where we find the fortified medieval villages Mutso and Shatili. Close to the border with the tiny republics of Chechnya and Dagestan, this is Georgia's most traditional region, home to animist shrines, hidden churches and impressive stone-built defensive towers. After our 'loop' northwards into the mountains, we will add to our understanding of this fascinating country with a day of guided sightseeing in Tbilisi and in the nearby town of Mtskheta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former Georgian capital.
