With almost 30 years in the business of operating adventure holidays, there is no-one better able to look after your winter holidays than KE. Our winter holidays are all about having fun in the snow and the mountains, away from the downhill crowds and busy ski resorts. Instead, we seek out the quieter areas; ski touring in Sweden and Iceland, cross-country skiing across France's Jura Mountains, snowshoeing in the Alps and Pyrenees. With KE you can also get friendly with the local huskies on a dog-sledding adventure in Scandinavia, sleep in an igloo in Slovenia or explore the frozen interior of the far-flung island of South Georgia whilst making the classic ‘Shackleton Crossing' on skis. If you like snow, we definitely have a holiday to suit you. Quite aside from the popular pastimes of downhill skiing and snowboarding there are many adventurous activities that come into their own during the winter months and which can be enjoyed as a group activity with like-minded travellers. Our winter programme is divided into three holiday types: winter multi-activity, ski touring, and snowshoeing.

Inside the Arctic Circle - Skiing the Kings Trail

9 days       from  £1545 excl. flights*

An Arctic winter wonderland adventure hoiday ski touring Nordic style along the famous King's Trail/Kungsleden of Sweden. With the winter sun resting below the horizon, the Arctic landscapes of northern Sweden, featuring majestic peaks and frozen waterfalls, are bathed in an ethereal light. Our fabulous ski touring holiday through this winter wonderland along the King's Trail/Kungsleden of Sweden begins with 2 nights in Abisko - perhaps the best place in the world to experience the stunning Northern Lights. Then, after a day's instruction in the basic techniques of Nordic Skiing, we ski off into the wilderness, skiing across dramatic valleys and glorious viewpoint passes, as we follow the route of the King's Trail/Kungsleden. Dog-sledges carry the group's equipment and as the journey progresses we have the unique opportunity to become acquainted with the dogs and their individual personalities within the team. We overnight in remote mountain huts, some of which have saunas - the perfect place to relax after a full day cross country skiing in the cold, crisp air. Finally, from the Kebnekaise Mountain Station, beneath the highest peak in Sweden, we use snowmobiles to return to the roadhead. This memorable Nordic ski touring holiday along the King's Trail/Kungsleden demands a good level of fitness and is suitable for occasional downhill skiers with no prior ski touring experience. All ski touring equipment can be hired locally in Sweden.

With over 200 holidays to choose from, KE Adventure Travel has one of the very best collections of trekking and walking holidays worldwide. Graded on a scale from 1 to 12, we have holidays to suit everyone. Our tougher treks are likely to involve multi-day hikes through wilderness regions, with porter support and tented accommodation. Whilst at the other end of the scale, our softer walking holidays are more likely to be hotel or lodge-based with a day-walk format and an emphasis on uncovering the area's history, culture and cuisine. From our earliest days we've developed a range of treks that include celebrated classics such as Peru's Inca Trail trek, the ascent of Tanzania's Kilimanjaro and the ever popular Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal. Alongside these, we have always made it a priority to seek out distinctive and unique itineraries in less familiar areas such as Armenia, Cameroon, Madagascar and Burma. Whichever of our trekking or walking holidays you choose to undertake, you can be sure you'll enjoy breaking out of your day-to-day routine and exploring exotic landscapes on foot, with the chance to experience different cultures.

Kungsleden Trek - The Kings Trail of Sweden

9 days       from  £1145 excl. flights*

Sweden's 'King's Trail' or 'Kungsleden' is one of Europe's wildest and most remote treks. It is situated 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland. In summer, the approach to Kebnekaise (2117m) Sweden's highest mountain, crosses an unspoiled land of flower-carpeted birch forest and spectacular glacial valleys where the indigenous Sami people tend their herds of reindeer. Starting out alongside the Abisko River, we trek to the wonderful viewpoint of the T'tja Pass (1100m) and continue via the impressive waterfalls of the Tj'ktajakka Valley. Carrying light backpacks, we overnight at a series of comfortable mountain huts, some of which have saunas to help soothe the limbs after a day's walking. Upon reaching the Kebnekaise Mountain Station, we have time for a glacier trek and for the ascent to the exposed and snowy summit of Sweden's highest peak. Superb trekking and the unforgettable experience of daylight at midnight makes this a unique adventure holiday.

Northern Lights Snowshoe Safari

6 days       from  £1145 excl. flights*

This is a guided winter activity holiday with a difference, as we don our snowshoes and head out into remote Swedish Lapland in search of the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. Snowshoes are the best way to explore here and the technique is easy to master making this the perfect holiday for those new to winter activities. Flying into Kiruna, we head up to the Abisko National Park, 200km north of the Arctic Circle; deep in the land of the Northern Lights. We spend our first night in comfortable chalets at the Abisko Mountain Station, where we meet our knowledgeable guide who will brief us about the coming days. We have a morning to explore Abisko and practice walking on our snowshoes before we head 35km out into the wilderness to the simple, but warm and comfortable, mountain cabins on the shore of frozen Lake Alesjaure; this will be our base for the next 2 nights. There is no road access to the area, so we will arrive by snowmobile pulled sled! High in the still white wilderness, away from civilisation, there is no light pollution to disturb our Aurora watching. With the dark nights and the area's favourable climate on our side, if the solar activity is good, you have a fantastic chance of seeing the Northern Lights from here. Not only are we in the prime location for Aurora spotting, this is also one most celebrated mountain areas in Swedish Lapland. During the days we wrap up warm and head out with our guide to investigate the pristine white landscape, we may even be able to track some of the area's wildlife. After a day out exploring in the snow we will be invited to warm up the Swedish way in the traditional wood sauna, before settling in for another evening of watching the night sky; we should have our warm clothes near by and be ready to run outside at any opportunity! After two nights at the hut we return to Abisko and have an evening free to relax before a day of optional activities with dog sledding, ice climbing or Nordic skiing on offer; those seeking another chance to see the lights may opt to visit the Aurora Sky Station. An excellent way to round off this winter adventure!
