The Mystics of Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is part of the second largest island in the world, and is notoriously known for its remote location, penetrating rainforest and colourful tribal people. We spend two weeks delving into this magical land, travelling in a motorised canoe up the Sepik River, hiking in the mountains and rainforest, and attending the vibrant Goroka Festival. We start with a night in Singapore before flying to Port Moresby and onto Wewak on the northern coast. Our 4 day trip up the Middle and Upper Sepik River in dugout motorised canoes takes us to isolated villages where we learn about local traditions, folklore and how they sustain their livelihoods. We then travel to Mt Hagen were we have a couple of days trekking through the rainforest. Part of the Bismark Mountain Range the landscape can be described as wild beauty in dense rainforest with an array of diverse flora and fauna, including orchids and flamboyant birds of paradise. The grand finale of our extraordinary holiday in this mysterious country is the Goroka Festival. Here around 100 tribes arrive for a '˜sing-sing' and show off their music, dancing, and elaborate face paintings, head dresses and costumes. It is certainly a spectacle to end our travels in this fascinating country.
