Macedonia - Off The Beaten Track 8 days
from £775 excl. flights* Macedonia is indeed one of the last frontiers of Europe and its mountainous landscapes are heaven for anyone looking to take an adventure holiday in the the great outdoors. This bespoke itinerary offers great hiking opportunities in the mountains scattered across the west of Macedonia. Here, we will encounter vibrant forest, spectacular cliffs and thundering waterfalls and, if we are lucky, spot some of the country's wildlife, such as fox and lynx and eagle. Macedonia is also special on account of its cultural heritage. In some of the country`s most stunning and remote locations, we will come across Orthodox monasteries and churches, many dating back for over a thousand years. With their well-preserved mosaics, frescoes and woodcarvings they are well worth a visit. Our adventure begins in Skopje, from where we journey into the Shar Planina Mountain Range, with the objective of climbing the highest peak, Titov Vrv (2747m). Then, in the Mavrovo National Park, we trek to the top of Medenica (2163m). There are far-reaching views from each of these summits, extening into Albania and beyond. We then tackle Golem Krchin (2341m) also in the picturesque Mavrovo region and from this peak it's even possible to see Mount Olympos in Greece! Driving south to the lakeside city of Ohrid, the ‘Jerusalem of the Balkans', we have a sightseeing day and a chance to see some of its reputedly 365 churches. A final day's walk in Galicica and a trek to the top of Magaro (2255m) rounds off this fantastic new Balkan adventure. |
