Armenia's Trekking Highlights 11 days
from £1095 excl. flights* Sandwiched between Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan, the landlocked Republic of Armenia is one of Europe's most mountainous countries, this walking holiday in Armenia promises a veritable kaleidoscope of culture, history and great trekking. We start our excellent itinerary with a visit to several medieval monasteries, hiking on rugged trails between these fine examples of Armenian architecture and stopping off at mountain villages and on the shore of the vast Lake Sevan. After this splendid cultural introduction, we cross the Geghama Mountains on a 4-day trek that sees us hiking through flower-spangled meadows to the volcanic crater lakes on the summit of Mount Azhdahak (3597m). Then, transferring to a high camp on Mount Aragats (4090m), we climb to its northern summit, the high point of the country, where the views extend to Mount Ararat in the nearby Turkish province of Eastern Anatolia. |

The rocky hillsides and flat peaks shrouded in the dense forests of the region give the north of Armenia its characteristic look.Turning back the clock, this region of Armenia bustled with activity as the Silk Road passed through this centre of monastic life and learning, with signs of this activity evident at the impressive monasteries that scatter the hillsides. |
