Historical attractions in Kazakhstan

The ancient town of Taraz, over 2,000 years old, was once a haven for Silk Road travellers. Its attractions include the 11th century Islamic shrines the Dauitbek and Kharakhan Mausoleums, the Regional Museum and the Central Bazaar for buying crafts and silks. Close to the town lie the famous Mausoleums of Aysha-Bibi and Babazhi Katun. | |

Turkistan in southern Kazakhstan contains more historical sites than any other place in the country. It is home to Kazakhstan's most famous and iconic building - the Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yawasi, a great Turkic holy man and Sufi. This was built during the time of Tamerlane in the 14th century and is one of the largest and best preserved buildings of this period, with the designs later influencing the construction of Samarkand. Surrounding the mausoleum are a rose garden, an archaeological museum, a mosque and other monuments. Close to Turkistan are the ruins of the old Silk Road city of Sauran. The Tamalgy Gorge Petroglyphs comprise some 5,000 carvings dating from the Middle Bronze Age (14th century BC) to the 20th century and illustrate the husbandry, social organization and rituals of pastoral peoples.
