UNESCO World Heritage Sites in El Salvador

Joya de Cerén Archaeological Site

Joya de Cerén was a farming community that was buried by an eruption of the Laguna Caldera Volcano in approximately 600 AD. The excellently preserved remains provide an important insight into the lives of farming communities of this region in this period of time. 12 structures have been excavated which include living quarters, storehouses, workshops, kitchens and a communal sauna. It is thought about 200 people lived here at the time, though no human remains have been found, indicating the residents had time to flee from the eruption.
