Experiences > Trekking opportunities > Asia > Mountain trekking in Yunnan

Yunnan Province is one of China's most beautiful areas, with spectacular mountain scenery, great biodiversity and a diverse and vibrant culture of ethnic minorities and Tibetan influence. This makes it a perfect destination for trekkers. The town of Bin Zhong Luo, northwest of Lijiang, is the base for a 2-3 day trek to the snow-capped peak of Bi Luo Mountain at 3970 metres. Further north, Deqin is the base for trekking around the sacred Kawakarpo Mountain (Meili Snow Mountain), at 6740 metres the highest point in Yunnan Province. The routes here are pilgrimages for people from China and Tibet and colourful prayer flags and Tibetan villages will be frequently seen. The trails take you through ancient forests and offer spectacular views of the mountains and two sacred waterfalls which descend from a cliff off the mountain. Close by lies the Mingyong Glacier, the lowest in Asia, offering more fantastic views.

Experience the world at handlebar level with the cycling holiday experts. Ever since we organised our first cycle tour in India in 1978 we recognised that this was the perfect means to explore remote villages a world away from the highways. If you haven’t cycled since your school days don’t worry. All our trips have support crew and backup vehicle so you can cycle at your own pace, while there are no yellow jersey awards at the end of the day.  We operate our cycle tours in India, Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Peru.

Our diverse range of natural history and cultural adventures combine our expert knowledge of remote regions with our ability to devise exhilarating journeys. There is little or no camping on these trips while at night we stay at comfortable hotels, local inns or well-appointed lodges. On these journeys you may enjoy the local hospitality of the inns in the remote countryside of Japan, explore a Buddhist monastery deep in the mountains of Tibet or delve into the history of the Great Game in Kashgar, China.

Since the early days we have maintained that trekking is ideally suited to exploring villages and monasteries in remote regions and getting close up to inspiring mountain scenery. We design trekking holidays to perfection as so many of our past trekkers will testify. Our treks help you discover the remote trails of the Himalaya in Nepal, Tibet, India, Sikkim and Bhutan; the dramatic Karakoram in Pakistan; the Andes from Patagonia to Peru; the Table Mountains of Venezuela; the Rockies and National Parks of North America; the High Atlas of Morocco; the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia; Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Mount Meru in East Africa; along the Great Wall of China and ancient pilgrim trails in Japan; hill tribe country in Vietnam and Thailand; Turgen Mountain in Mongolia; the; the European Alps and Dolomites; Iceland’s rugged wilderness; the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Australia’s remote outback and Tasmanian trails.

Yunnan Cycle and Tiger Leaping Gorge

Yunnan, home to many minorities, is arguably one of China's most breathtaking and fascinating regions. To enable you to get up close to its colourful ethnic minorities and stunning natural environment, we have designed an adventure like no other. From the provincial capital of Kunming we head to Dali to experience a rural Xizhou village and start our cycling. A day discovering the beautiful Er Lake and then cycling out on rural roads, crossing ancient bridges to Shaxi. Traveling out to small Naxi villages where we take a break from a cycles but not the adventure as we hike through Tiger Leaping Gorge staying in small local guesthouses along the trail. After our hike we will jump back on our cycles to the tiny town of Da Ju on the banks of the Yangtze River. Taking the backroads out we cross the snow capped peaks of Jade Dragon mountain to the World Heritage town of Lijiang. Exploring the Lashi Lake and learning about the Naxi people before this adventure ends back in Kunming.
