16 days

Since the early days we have maintained that trekking is ideally suited to exploring villages and monasteries in remote regions and getting close up to inspiring mountain scenery. We design trekking holidays to perfection as so many of our past trekkers will testify. Our treks help you discover the remote trails of the Himalaya in Nepal, Tibet, India, Sikkim and Bhutan; the dramatic Karakoram in Pakistan; the Andes from Patagonia to Peru; the Table Mountains of Venezuela; the Rockies and National Parks of North America; the High Atlas of Morocco; the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia; Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and Mount Meru in East Africa; along the Great Wall of China and ancient pilgrim trails in Japan; hill tribe country in Vietnam and Thailand; Turgen Mountain in Mongolia; the; the European Alps and Dolomites; Iceland’s rugged wilderness; the Southern Alps of New Zealand, Australia’s remote outback and Tasmanian trails.

Many of our Adventure Touring trips include day walks.  May of these day walks are optional and whilst we hope that all participants will join in, they are definitely not compulsory. Day walks are defined as 1-6 hour walks, which may include a city tour, exploration of some ruins, a jungle boardwalk or on certain trips, a more demanding day hike. Some trips include more day walks than others, and we recommend you refer to the trip notes to assess whether this is the trip for you.

Alpamayo Circuit

Without doubt, the Cordillera Blanca range provides some of the most spectacular and varied trekking and climbing landscapes in the world. The range boasts more than 50 peaks of 5700m or higher of which some 20 surpass the 6000 metre mark. Huascarán is, at 6768m, the highest mountain in Peru while the pyramid of Alpamayo is arguably its most spectacular peak, referred to by seasoned trekkers and climbers as a peak of overwhelming beauty. We find, within this 170km-long range, the greatest concentration of tropical-zone glaciers on earth. Turquoise glacial lakes abound and vertical granite walls rise thousands of metres into the sky. Our Alpamayo Circuit trek weaves a route through the heart of the mountains, crossing a number of high passes which lead us into valleys with hugely varied mountain landscapes. The focal point of the trek, the famous Alpamayo pyramid was once voted the most beautiful mountain in the world. The expedition sees us cross the continental divide and, after a succession of stunning views, finds us camping at the amazing Avalancha Campsite (4650m) where we look down as avalanches crash from immense fissured glaciers on the flanks of the Conrahierbas massif. En-route we pass through remote farming communities that greet us with warm hospitality and allows us to gain an insight into traditional Quechua Indian way of life. The trek ends after our final breathtaking pass at 4850m and descent to the Ulta valley. This adventure has been designed with acclimitisation in mind and to ensure that the 'work' of trekking is properly rewarded by the satisfaction of being in an incredibly beautiful place!

Cordillera Blanca Climber

18 days

KE Adventure Travel has an outstanding collection of climbing holidays that will take you to the world's most spectacular mountain ranges. Our climbing trips usually involve the ascent of snow-covered peaks where climbing ropes, ice axes and other items of mountaineering equipment may be used. Our climbing holidays can involve multi-day approaches on foot to a basecamp below the objective mountain. On this stage of the trip (which is effectively trekking) there will usually be the support of a trek crew to carry personal belongings, along with any tents, group climbing equipment, food and cooking equipment. The climbing is generally above the snow-line and can be at high altitude. Most of our climbing holidays have an experienced Western leader and in the case of our Alpine trips, the leader is always IFMGA qualified. None of our climbing trips requires more than a single mountaineering ice-axe, together with crampons and a climbing harness. Ropes may be used to safeguard steep or exposed sections or crevassed sections of the route. With long days, high altitudes, glacier camping and the possibility of encountering poor weather, these trips can be challenging.

Cordillera Blanca Climber

The Cordillera Blanca in Peru is probably the best known range of mountains in the South American Andes, with sixteen peaks over 6000 metres. We start this fantastic Peru climbing holiday in Huaraz, the point of access for treks and climbs in Peru's northern cordilleras including the Cordillera Blanca. We spend three days at our hotel base in this Peruvian mountain town, making acclimatisation hikes to local lakes and viewpoints, before beginning the main climbing holiday, starting with a trek to our first base camp in the Cordillera Blanca. After the straightforward snow climb of Maparaju (5424m), we then trek through the beautiful Cayesh Valley and trek across the Huapi Pass to our next base camp beside Laguna Perolcocha. From here we will climb two excellent peaks, Ishinca (5548m) and Urus (5400m), before tackling our final and most challenging objective, Tocllaraju (6034m), one of the sixteen '6000-ers' of the Peru Cordillera Blanca. Comparable to our Bolivian Climber which is now an established KE classic, this climbing holiday in Peru is the one to do if you are looking for the next climbing challenge!

Cordillera Blanca Trek - Alpamayo Circuit

The Cordillera Blanca is an apt name for this range, with its snow-fluted summits, knife-edge ridges, tumbling glaciers, blue mountain lakes and steep-sided valleys. After a short overnight stop in Lima, we follow the Pan-American Highway to the mountain town of Huaraz to begin this most picturesque of Peruvian trekking holidays. Brimming with the buzz of fellow trekkers', Huaraz provides a great base for our planned acclimatisation walks. Departing Huaraz, we take a short transfer to the start of our trek, where we will spend the next nine nights under canvas, supported by our Andean trek crew. Crossing high passes, following ancient Andean-trails and passing through Quechan-Indian communities, this is a superb trek which provides a succession of simply stunning views of Mt Huascaran (6768m), Mt Taulliraju (5830m) and Mt Rinrijirca (5808m). The centrepiece of this trekking holiday is undoubtedly our visit to base camp of the pyramidal peak, Alpamayo (5947m). Ranked to be one of the most spectacular treks in the world, this high level trail through the Peru's Cordillera Blanca is likely to provide one of the most satisfying of trekking holidays!

Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit

Peru's Cordillera Huayhuash, together with its larger and better-known northern neighbour, the Cordillera Blanca, provides arguably the best trekking and climbing in the whole of South America and the perfect area for a high level trekking holiday. The compact massif of the Huayhuash is famed for its dramatic mountain scenery, typified by fluted ice faces and knife-edge ridges. A stunning high-level trail makes an improbable circuit of this mountain group and provides trekking on a Himalayan scale. The area of the Huayhuash is also abundant in mineral wealth and every year new mining roads appear in the mountains. Our local knowledge and contacts in this area from more than 12 years of continuous operation, mean that we can adapt and maintain a flexible itinerary to avoid these roads. Presenting a rewarding challenge to regular hillwalkers, KE’s unique variation of this classic trek crosses a succession of high passes and takes us into remote valleys for views of Peru’s highest peaks, including Yerupaja (6634m) and Huascaran (6768m). We also visit Siula Grande, scene of Joe Simpson’s 'Touching the Void' epic. Towards the end of the trek, there is the option to make the straightforward ascent of Cerro Jyamy (5200m), which affords views of the entire range. With superb campsites beside green glacial lakes and the charming company of our Quechua Indian crew, this trip offers a fantastic South American experience.

Huayhuash Circuit

The Cordillera Huayhuash is one of the most spectacular ranges in the Peruvian Andes. It was a region that attracted worldwide attention following Joe Simpson's graphic account of his ascent of Siula Grande in his book 'Touching the Void'. This full circuit trek is the best way to fully appreciate the sheer scale of these snowcapped summits including Yerupaja, the second highest mountain in Peru. Our trip includes ample time for acclimatisation in the Cordillera Blanca and Huaraz before spending 12 days crossing high passes - all in the vicinity of 5000m. A highlight for all will be a side trip to Siula Grande Base Camp and an ascent of Cerro Bella Vista for incredible views. Each day provides an ever changing backdrop of soaring peaks including the distinctive needle like peak of Jirishanca and the impressive summit of Yerupaja at 6640m. At night we camp in tranquil locations alongside glacial lakes or alpine meadows in this unrivalled corner of the Andes. Anyone wishing to add a trip to Machu Picchu can easily do so, please ask for more details.
