Our Discovery collection draws together the best of our holidays that focus on the culture of a destination, as well as on visiting iconic sights and embracing local traditions. Some of these Discovery holidays will also have an element of activity, combining sightseeing with short walks, for example. Others might have a multi-activity holiday format, including biking and/or rafting, for instance, and these holidays are specifically designed for the adrenaline seeker! Also within our discovery collection are those of our holidays with a wildlife emphasis, photographic workshops, and polar cruise holidays. Never too physically demanding, these are predominantly touring holidays and their grade (usually towards the lower end of our 1 to 12 scale) reflects, in part, the remoteness of the area visited and the conditions likely to be encountered. Our Discovery holidays allow the discerning traveller to get right to the heart of many of the world's most stimulating destinations.

Polar Cruise - Antarctica In Depth

This 13-day cruise to Antarctica aboard the MS Expedition, a recently refitted and refurbished vessel, uniquely equipped to meet the demands of cruising in polar regions. This itinerary is similar to the ‘Antarctica Classic' except if you go ‘In Depth' you have an additional two days to explore its majesty. We board the boat in Ushuaia, the southernmost city on Earth, which is situated in the Argentinean part of Tierra del Fuego. Our journey takes us through the Drake Passage to the so-called Antarctic Convergence, where colliding cold and warm waters force nutrients to the surface, attracting seabirds and whales, and giving us our first glimpses of Antarctic wildlife. Further south, we reach the South Shetland Islands and cross the Bransfield Strait to reach the Antarctic Peninsula. Here we enter a world of immense scale and visual splendour, the last true wilderness on earth. Huge blue icebergs calmly floating in the waters, massive penguin rookeries, seabirds diving and whales breaching. Zodiac excursions are guided by the expert expedition staff and there are opportunities for kayaking and also to camp for a night on the Antarctic Peninsula. Built for the Southern Ocean the MS Expedition is a sturdy ship with a passenger capacity of just over one hundred. With its dining areas, presentation rooms, different cabin sizes, mud room and viewing decks you will have plenty of space and entertainment whilst onboard. Each day there are presentations and informative talks from the staff on the wildlife, history and environment of the area. After 6 days around the peninsula, we return through the Drake Passage with magical memories of an enchanted world.

Antarctic Basecamp Adventure

This is Polar cruising in Antarctica for the restless! The ship becomes our base camp on these voyages. We sail down to the ‘High Antarctic' where we have numerous inlets and channels to choose from to set up base. We will have 2 or 3 different base camp locations in the duration of the voyage. Once we have in place we go out and enjoy multi-activities which go beyond the normal shore program. We can take the kayaks out, or enjoy some time on shore snowshoeing or if we are more intrepid we can do a few hours mountaineering on Antarctica, giving us a huge sense of achievement and a true feeling of the remoteness and scale of Antarctica. We can also opt for a photo-work shop or shore excursions on the Zodiacs. Everyone will also get the chance to camp on Antarctica for a night. All these activities are included in the price of the holiday and do not require any previous experience. The only activity which is extra and requires experience is scuba diving. Of course we get extremely close to the wildlife during our activities as well, which is a totally exhilarating experience. This is the Polar cruise holidays for wildlife lovers and outdoorsy people.

Classic Antarctica - Expedition

To the South Shetland Isles After an included night in Ushuaia we navigate the Beagle Channel then head south across the Drake Passage and across the turbulent waters of the Antarctic Convergence. This meeting of cold polar water flowing north and warmer equatorial water moving south pushes nutrient rich waters to the surface, attracting a variety of seabirds, whales and other species. Reaching land at the South Shetland Islands we hope to sail into the flooded volcanic caldera of Deception Island. Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula Ice-capped mountains, crevassed glaciers and endless white expanses herald our arrival in Antarctica. Possible landings include Paradise Harbour, Neko Harbour or Wilhelmina Bay and cruising Lemaire Channel, Errera Channel or Neumayer Channel. Scientific research stations and abandoned whaling stations will also be of interest. Conditions permitting, we'll attempt two excursions per day to explore the rich diversity of wildlife and potential wildlife sightings include Gentoo, Adelie and Chinstrap penguins, Fur, Leopard, Weddell and Crabeater seals, Minke and Humpback whales - and possibly even Orcas. Not to mention the abundance of seabirds, most notably the albatross that spend the day soaring above our wake.
