How to choose your trip to South Africa

South Africa is one of the continent's most popular destinations. Tours focus on the famous Garden Route (along the country's southern coast and the Cape) or the wildlife parks, indigenous culture and historical sites of the eastern provinces, with many comprehensive tours encompassing both regions also available. Hiking tours are available on the dramatic Drakensburg Mountains near Lesotho. South Africa is also a key part of overland itineraries, at the start or end of journeys throughout southern Africa or all the way north to Zanzibar, Nairobi and the gorillas.

With over 200 holidays to choose from, KE Adventure Travel has one of the very best collections of trekking and walking holidays worldwide. Graded on a scale from 1 to 12, we have holidays to suit everyone. Our tougher treks are likely to involve multi-day hikes through wilderness regions, with porter support and tented accommodation. Whilst at the other end of the scale, our softer walking holidays are more likely to be hotel or lodge-based with a day-walk format and an emphasis on uncovering the area's history, culture and cuisine. From our earliest days we've developed a range of treks that include celebrated classics such as Peru's Inca Trail trek, the ascent of Tanzania's Kilimanjaro and the ever popular Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal. Alongside these, we have always made it a priority to seek out distinctive and unique itineraries in less familiar areas such as Armenia, Cameroon, Madagascar and Burma. Whichever of our trekking or walking holidays you choose to undertake, you can be sure you'll enjoy breaking out of your day-to-day routine and exploring exotic landscapes on foot, with the chance to experience different cultures.

Trek the Drakensberg and Cape Town

13 days       from  £1845 excl. flights*

This adventure holiday in South Africa starts with a few days in Cape Town before we travel to the Drakensberg for a superb, challenging, 6 day trekking traverse of these dramatic mountains. We have a busy, but beautiful, 4 days in Cape Town walking up Table Mountain, exploring the Cape Peninsula with its lighthouse and famous Cape of Good Hope and of course the Penguins at Simonstown. The day before we travel to the north we have a day exploring the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschoek, with a bit of winetasting - delicious! The second section of this adventure is trekking across the Drakensberg from Royal Natal National Park, one of the most northerly points, to the southwest and the world famous, majestic Cathedral Peak (3005m). We start with the dramatic cliffs of the Amphitheatre and the exposed chain ladders to bring us onto the escarpment and the impressive Thukela Falls. With porter support, from the local Zulu community, we camp on the escarpment, providing a real ‘out there' experience and also allows us to enjoy the ever-changing views of rock formations such as 'Madonna and her Worshippers' and the Mnweni Pinnacles. With its airy pathways and sections of scrambling, the ascent of Cathedral Peak makes a suitably exciting finale to this fantastic trekking holiday. Our last night is spent in the traditional village of the local porters seeing if we can learn some of their fabulous dances (optional!!). This is one of our Explore International holidays. Participants on these trips can book through KE or through one of our international partners. This helps us to gather together sufficient numbers of like-minded adventurers to get your holiday up and running quickly. Led by an English-speaking guide, the cosmopolitan nature of these groups can be an important part of the experience!
