Kyrgyzstan, China & Pakistan: Few places on earth can match the grandeur of the epic scenery encountered on this unique itinerary. Travelling along sections of two of the world’s most scenic drives – the Pamir and Karakoram Highways - we’ll not only meet the varied ethnic groups who call this lofty world home, but we’ll also witness the incredible diversity of some of the planet’s most famous ranges including the Himalayas, Hindu Kush and Tien Shan. Crossing remote borders between Western China, Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan, we’ll reach passes of 4800m and find ourselves in the stunning Hunza Valley (often referred to as Shangri La) with views of 7000m peaks all around. Following in the footsteps of ancient Silk Road traders we’ll experience the hospitality of Kyrgyz nomads, visit the bustling Sunday market in Kashgar and be amongst the few visitors these days to experience northern Pakistan’s timeless beauty. This is very much a trip of a lifetime.

The Pamir Highway is undoubtedly one of the world’s most stunning roads and yet few Westerners have ever travelled its length, lying as it does in a rarely visited and remote part of Central Asia. It begins, as does our land journey, in the ancient city of Osh, at the head of the fertile Fergana Valley and then winds its way slowly southwards towards the mighty Pamir range, which form part of the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Following this road for the most part, we will stay in the shadow of the epic Peak Lenin (7134m) before heading up into the High Pamir, from where we will head due south through Murgab and down alongside the Afghan border on the Wakhan Corridor, before swinging north through Khorog to Dushanbe. In true Wild Frontiers style, there will be ample time to explore on foot and meet many of the diverse people who call these harsh lands their home. Combining some of the world’s most striking mountain scenery, with homestays with the most hospitable locals and an ancient culture that hasn’t changed for thousands of years, this is very much a trip for the exploratory traveller.

Kyrgyzstan is quite simply one of the most beautiful countries on earth. The Tien Shan or “Mountains of Heaven” that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild and are dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams and turquoise lakes. And far away, scratching the belly of the endless sky is a never-changing vista of lofty snow-capped peaks. With 90% of the country lying above 1500m this is very much a destination for lovers of epic mountain scenery and this new comprehensive “Kyrgyzstan only” trip has been a long time coming and seeks to do justice to one of our favourite countries. From the beautiful alpine scenery of Sary Chelek and the ancient walnut forests of Arslanbob to the dramatic Silk Road valley of Tash Rabat and the endless grasslands that surround Son Kul, we’ll not only be endlessly awed by the stunning landscapes of the “Switzerland of Central Asia” but in addition we’ll meet the nomads who call this land home and who are amongst the most welcoming people on the planet.

Trips in Africa, Central Asia, Middle East and South America on our own purpose built overlanding vehicles with a crew of two from 15 days to 15 weeks. Our vehicles carry up to 24 travellers and are camping based trips. Our trips are run on a full participation basis so have fun helping to cook for the group (on a rota system) and taking an active involvement in the day to day running of the trip.
