Mount Damavand and the Pearls of Persia

15 days       from  £2395 excl. flights*

Iran, the former Kingdom of Persia, was one of the most important empires of the ancient world and is home to the highest mountain in the Middle East, Mt Damavand (5671m). Damavand is a dormant volcano, the highest in Asia, and its dramatic mountain-top cone lies close to the capital Tehran, making it one of the most accessible 5000m peaks in the world. Iran is also home to some of the greatest treasures of the ancient Islamic period and the cities of Shiraz, Isfahan and Persepolis offer many marvellous monuments as well as an insight into a fascinating culture and history. Our holiday begins in Tehran before a transfer to the Alborz Mountains of the north where we will spend two days acclimatising on the Hesarschal plateau at 3750m, climbing technically straightforward peaks including Alam Kuh, Iran's second highest mountain. Following the coastline of the Caspian Sea we now turn our attention to Damavand. Technically easy, this is still a demanding peak although our preparation in the Albruz will provide the all-important acclimatisation needed for summit success. After making our ascent of Damavand, we return to Tehran to get ready for a change of pace as we make the transition from mountaineering to cultural exploration. Flying south to Shiraz we visit the sights of this ancient city, home of the great Sufi poets, Saadi and Hafiz, and their magnificent mausoleums. En route to the north we visit Persepolis, the ruined 'city of the Persians' before travelling further north to Isfahan, famous as the 'Pearl of Persia' with its great palace and Grand Bazaar. Returning to Tehran, we can reflect on geographical and cultural highpoints alongside our experience of the friendliness and warmth of the Iranian people. Whilst it may not have been at the top of many travellers must-see destinations for a while, Iran is now 'back on the map'.
